Suki's Kimono
All of these words have two vowels side by side. In many words, vowels together create one sound. In these words however, the vowels have two distinct sounds and each vowel belongs to a separate syllable. When a vowel is at the END of a syllable, they say the "long sound" or their "name". When vowels are not at the end of the syllable, they say their "short sound" unless they are paired with a silent "e". For example: In the word "create" the syllables are CRE/ATE. The "e" says its name at the end of the syllable, the "a" says its name because of the silent "e". In the word "medium" ME/DI/UM the "e" says its name, the "i" says /ee/ and the "u" says its short sound. Many of the words this week have "i" saying /ee/ at the end of a syllable.
